Gauteng North with work to do in East London

LADIES GOLFGauteng continued their winning march in the Swiss Team Trophy on day two of the 72 Hole Teams Championship, while Border launched a strong attack to take control in the Challenge Trophy at East London Golf Club on Monday.

Reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play champion Ivanna Samu returned rounds of 72 and 71 to back Kaleigh Telfer and Woo-Ju Son and the trio boosted Gauteng A to the top of the summit on 430.

Samu combined with Kaleigh Telfer (71) for a second round 143 and partnered 14-year-old Son, who fired a three-under-par 70, to a third round 141.

The union’s title hunt was further strengthened by their B-side, who finished second.

Gauteng B’s Natasha Carlsson (73-76) and Eleonora Galletti (74-73) combined for rounds of 147 and 149 to finish 11 strokes off the pace and three strokes ahead of Western Province.

Gauteng North finished the day in fourth on 447, three strokes clear of Boland.

The story of the day, however, was the feisty trio from Border, who wiped out a four stroke deficit after an opening 160 and rallied with two rounds of 140 to lead the B-Division on 448.

Sisters Yolanda and Siviwe Duma both signed for one-under-par 72s in the second round, while Siviwe Duma carded a third round 74 to add to a 70 from 2015 Border Championship winner, Zethu Myeki.

Last year Border marched to a B-Division victory in the 2014 South African Women’s Inter-Provincial and the team is very well placed to add to the Challenge Trophy to their trophy haul on Tuesday.

The local heroes lead by 22 strokes from overnight leaders Eastern Province and will start the final round 23 strokes ahead of third placed Ekurhuleni A.

Eastern Province’s Imkeleen Meyer (78-75) and Minette Olivier (82-79) posted rounds of 160 and 154, while Caitlyn Macnab (77-73) and Sarah Bouch (79-82) registered rounds of 156 and 155 for Ekurhuleni.
