PORT ELIZABETH, 5 July 2016 – Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s A-team made the most of their home course advantage to soar to victory in the 36-hole stroke play seeding qualifier at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championship on Tuesday.
Luke Jerling, Colin Baldie, Jacues Smith and Michael Mayberry combined for rounds of 221 and 218 at the Humewood Links to top the standings at 439.
The local favourites finished 11 shots clear of Varsity College A and 12 strokes ahead of the University of Pretoria’s A-Team.
Varsity College’s B-side took fourth on 457, while Tuks B edged out Central University of Technology Free State A by two shots to take fifth on 463.
Jerling led NMMU A with a one-under-par 71. Mayberry supported with a 70 and Smith carded a 77 to help the side to pole position. Baldie signed for a non-counting 78.
Jerling tied for first on three-under-par 141 in the Individual Competition with against Clayton Mansfield from Varsity College A and defeated the KwaZulu-Natal golfer in a sudden death play-off to collect the title.
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University A will face off against eighth-seed University of Stellenbosch A in the first round of the match play stage.
Jerling and Smith go up against Philip Swanepoel and Joubert Spies and Baldie and Maybery will pair up against Uli Boezaart and Herman Venter.
Varsity College A play University of Cape Town A, and their B-Team will tackle University of Pretoria’s B-side. The A-team takes on Central University of Technology Free State A.
