Match Play Qualifier

To be crowned Gauteng North match play champ is a truly rewarding feeling if you look at the names that are already on the trophy, names like George Coetzee for example. This trophy has been with us for years, inherited from the foundation days.

The first day of match play (Monday) is a normal 36 hole stroke play tournament and anyone can enter. These rounds will count toward your stroke average (DOoM). Everyone plays stroke play to try and end up in the top 16 of his or her division. The next morning the first match play round starts. The top 16 available A-Division players and the top 16 B division players. No A division player will be permitted to play in the B Division. Girls are permitted to participate in the match-play tournament against the boys. They compete in the relevant division qualified for. The A division plays from Scratch, but the B-division plays from handicap. (The lowest handicap drops to scratch) If a girl competes in the B-division, an adjustment to her handicap is made based on the difference in stroke rating between the men’s and ladies T’s.

2017 Saw the introduction of a separate division for u/13 players. The u/13’s only have a single division. All matches are contested from handicap with the lowest handicap playing from scratch. 16 Spots are available for the first round.

Tuesday morning 16 players arrive for round 1. Tuesday afternoon, 16 players are reduced to 8, who start round 2. By the end of Tuesday, only 4 players remain from each division. (4 A, 4 B and 4 u/13).

Play resumes on Thursday morning for round 3. By Thursday afternoon only two players are left per division to compete in the finals.
