BENONI (11 July 2016) – Gauteng North sisters Marne and Eugenie Clack and newly-minted Liberty Gauteng North Match Play champion Danielle du Toit reached the third round in the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur at the Ebotse Links on Monday.

Marne will go up against Du Toit in the third round, while Eugene faces Ethel Ruthenberg from Southern Cape.

Marne had a first round bye, and dispatched Lynette Pretorius from Gauteng 5 & 3 in the second round. Eugenie defeated Lindi Coetzee from Services 1-up to advance to round two, where she eliminated Kiera Floyd from Ekurhuleni 1-up. Du Toit whipped Zane Naude from Bankveld Golf Estate 7 & 5 in the first round and crushed Tara Griebenow from Western Province 6 & 4 in round two.

With a major Grade 12 Maths exam still to negotiate later this week, Kaleigh Telfer is pleased the numbers on her scorecard are falling in her favour at the moment as she won her second round match in the

Telfer, the reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play champion, kept her hopes of a double on track when she beat Chiara Contomathios 1Up to move into Tuesday’s third round. It took a wedge from 120 metres to within inches of the hole on 18 to earn Telfer the win in a tight match.

But after a comfortable 6&4 victory over Petrone Rudolph in the first round on Monday morning, Telfer would probably have appreciated a tough second round match at the start of a tournament where she’s determined not to get ahead of herself.

“It’s definitely looking good, but I can’t get ahead of myself. Match play is always tough. The double is there this week, but our American college players are back and Ivanna Samu is up there as well, so it’s going to be tough.”

Added to this is the fact that Telfer is in the midst of her Grade 12 exams. “I’ve done pretty well. I write my final exams this Sunday – Maths and Biology. It’s tough to balance golf and school, but I’ve managed to work around it.”

Of the returning “Americans”, Michaela Fletcher enjoyed a first-round bye before claiming a 6&4 victory over Natasha Carlsson in the second round. She will play Symone Henriques in the third round.

South African number one Samu also enjoyed a bye in the first round and then beat Adele Beytell 7&6.

“It was a good day. I just had to be consistent, which is what I wanted. The greens are getting quicker and harder though. I won’t say I’m completely happy with my game, but it went my way today. I’m enjoying the golf course and the challenge. It’s a great match play course because you can take risks,” said Samu, who has a score to settle after losing in the final of this tournament last year.

South African number three Zethu Myeki had a first-round bye and was then knocked out by Caitlyn Macnab who beat her 1Up. Macnab will play Telfer in the third round.
