Moolman takes 2023 GNGU Mid Amateur Title

After a lot of rain the past 2 weeks, the GNGU Mid Amateur Open was held in wet conditions at Centurion Country Club.  The Club did a fantastic job in getting the course into a playable condition, albeit a Par 68 course.
The fight at the top of the leaderboard was tight, with Louis Moolman and Jacques van Tonder tied at the top after 18 holes.  Round 2 proved their fight as they ended 36 holes tied on -9 for the tournament.  Louis Moolman continued his form after winning the CGGU Open in January and managed to win on the 1st playoff hole.

Thank you to Galvin Green for their partnership towards the event and the Club for their hospitality.  For full results CLICK HERE

Broomhead wins back to back

The heatwave had to be broken by some lightning and rain eventually and unfortunately with less than 9 holes to play in the 2023 GNGU Open, the tournament had to be reduced to a 54 hole event due to lightning.
The tournament showed some great golf, with Altin van der Merwe shooting a cool 65 in round 1 to take the lead, but after round 2 he was tied with KZN’s Jonathan Broomhead.  Jonathan’s excellent form continued after winning the FS Open trophy just last weekend, and shooting rounds of 68, 67 and 67 he won the tournament on 202 (-14), 4 shots ahead of Altin.

A big thank you to Wingate Park Country Club’s members for giving up the course for the weekend.  To their staff, management and Committee thank you for your hospitality.  The course was in absolute immaculate condition and a privilege for the participants to play.

To Galvin Green, new partners of Gauteng North Golf Union, thank you for your sponsorship towards this event.

The scorching heat did not seem to pose much of a problem to some of the Seniors at the GN Senior Open this weekend at Woodhill Country Club.  After round 1, 12 competitors were level or better with Evan MacKenzie and Nico Reyneke tied for the lead on -3.
Round 2 showed some tough competition but North West’s Douglas McCabe was on fire shooting 67 in the second round to win the tournament, 2 shots ahead of top
Super Senior finisher Gerhard Strydom.

A big thank you to some of our supporters who contributed towards the handouts given to the players before the tournament.
Also thank you to the players from Reunion Island who came out to participate in the event.  Gordon Wessels will be representing the Gauteng North Seniors at the World Amateur in Reunion in April – his trip is sponsored by the Reunion Island Tourism Board, Air Austral and supported by the Reunion Golf Association and their partners.  We thank you for this opportunity and your continued support.
Finally, to Woodhill Country Club’s staff, management, committee and members.  Thank you for giving up your beautiful course in order for us to host this event, as well as for all your hospitality and assistance.  It is hugely appreciated!

Connor McKenzie wins Silver Salver

Hot weather and lightning delays proved to make Silver Salver a tough test this year.
Unfortunately due to lightning, the tournament had to once again be reduced to 54 holes.
The leaderboard stayed tight at the top throughout, however CGGU’s Conner MacKenzie managed to lift the trophy with rounds of 70, 73 and 69 ahead of nearest rivals Joshua Koekemoer, Dawid Opperman and Ruben van der Berg who were all one shot behind.

A huge thank you to Irene Country Club for giving up the course for the weekend.  The Clubhouse is really starting to look fantastic after recent upgrades and with more to come we are proud to call Irene the home of Gauteng North.  Thank you to the management and staff for your hospitality and assistance in helping us host a successful tournament.
Another big shoutout is to GolferAde.  In the scorching weather, the GolferAde and waters on the tee were a huge bonus for the players to help stay hydrated – Hydrate Better, Play Better, It’s a Gimme!
